From the Introduction
Every evening at half past five, a retired man in Leeds asks for a place to be laid at the table for a lad nobody else can see. In Galway a collie is sent into the yard at two in the morning to chase off men who are not there. The writers here describe caring for someone with Lewy body dementia through visions, good hours and very long nights.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe caring for someone with Lewy body dementia, written by husbands, wives, sons, daughters, grandchildren, a sister, a brother, a daughter-in-law, an unmarried partner and an ex-wife. Many were first told it was old age, Parkinson's, secret drinking or late-onset schizophrenia. The carers range from a twenty-two-year-old in her grandparents' spare room to a husband of eighty-four, from Leeds and Houston to Pune, Lagos, Manila and Lahore. They write about visitors who stay for tea, an imaginary ginger cat, monkeys on a balcony, a wife who politely tells her husband he is not her husband, and a retired police officer back on shift in her dreams. Practical worries fill the pages: blood pressure that drops on standing, an injection in an emergency room that a husband says should never have been given, confusion after a hip operation, thickened water, pill boxes and patches, taking the car keys, telling teenage sons, caring for a mother in Taipei through a screen, and joining a research study. Several describe moving a parent or spouse into a care home. The harder accounts do not look away: carers close to breaking point, a promise that could not be kept, the last months of a husband's life, and waking at three in the morning after the caring ends.
Who it's for
For husbands, wives, children and grandchildren caring for someone with Lewy body dementia at home, from a distance or in a care home, and for nurses and friends trying to understand.
