A diagnosis arrives with a great deal of information and almost no company. The scans are explained, the treatment plan is set out, and then you go home and try to imagine what the next eight months will actually be like. These volumes are written by people who have already been through those eight months and can tell you plainly.
The accounts cover the whole span: the appointment where it was said out loud, the decisions between treatment options, the infusion chair, the side effects nobody quite prepared them for, and the strange, under-discussed period after treatment ends when everyone else assumes it is over. Some volumes are written by families carrying a story forward on behalf of someone who did not survive. Those are among the most read books on this shelf.
Readers newly diagnosed usually start with the volume matching their own diagnosis — fifty breast cancer survival stories, fifty lung cancer survivor accounts, or fifty melanoma stories. If treatment rather than diagnosis is the immediate worry, fifty accounts from the chemotherapy infusion chair is the practical starting point, and is often bought by partners and carers as much as patients.
Each title is companion reading and personal testimony only. Nothing here is medical advice, and no account should be read as a guide to your own treatment decisions, which belong with your oncology team.
