Reading About Mental Health: Where to Start
A guide to our Mental Health shelf — twenty-one anthologies of first-person testimony, from anxiety and depression to grief, therapy, and recovery.
February 13, 2024 · By The Editors, Healing Stories Network · 1 min read

Mental health struggles are among the loneliest experiences a person can carry, in part because they are so hard to see and so hard to explain. Many people describe the same turning point: the first time they heard someone else put their exact inner weather into words. Suddenly the thing had a name, a shape, and — most importantly — other people who had survived it.
Our Mental Health shelf is built around that moment of recognition. Each volume gathers fifty first-person accounts of one experience, in the voices of people who have lived it — the hard days included, the recoveries unvarnished. Here is the shelf, mapped.
Where readers often start
Calm After the Storm: Anxiety Recovery Stories and Out of the Darkness: Depression Recovery Stories cover the two most common companions people seek. On the Couch: Therapy Success Stories is for anyone wondering, honestly, whether therapy is worth it.
