From the Introduction
A treadmill tilted up like a ramp, the number twelve on the screen, and thirty minutes of walking steadily towards nowhere in particular. One mother did it with a baby monitor balanced on the shelf; a retired teacher turned the slope down to five because her knees said no. The writers here describe sore calves, boredom, podcasts, and why they kept pressing start or stopped.

A note before you read

This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe the 12-3-30 incline walking routine, followed exactly, scaled down, or eventually given up. People started after a high blood pressure reading, a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, a heart attack and cardiac rehab, a shin injury that stopped them running, a hip replacement or breast cancer treatment, or simply to have thirty minutes that were theirs. A Sheffield bus driver, a fly-in fly-out miner in a Pilbara camp gym, a night-shift nurse in Gothenburg, a maize and sheep farmer in the Free State, a long-haul trucker, two competitive brothers in Leicester and a father taking his seventeen-year-old daughter's dare are among them, with voices from Pune to Albuquerque. One used a second-hand machine that only went to ten, a wheelchair user found his own uphill version, and a blind piano tuner learned the machine by touch. Writers walk with anxiety, ADHD, asthma, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's, sleep apnoea, PCOS and osteoporosis, and after a stroke, usually alongside medication and other care. Not every result matched the promises made online: one man lost far less weight than he hoped, a 72-year-old stopped after trouble with his heel and changed his routine, and a physiotherapist with long COVID describes pacing in the smallest steps.

Who it's for

For anyone curious about 12-3-30 after seeing it online, especially people starting from a sofa, a diagnosis or a long break, who want to know how it went for others.
