From the Introduction
A gentle finger presses on a crown that was meant to last for years, and the tooth moves. Others first noticed bleeding they ignored, a lip that stayed numb after surgery, or a thin grey line showing through the gum while shaving. The writers here describe dental implants that failed, early or after fifteen good years, and the slow business of deciding what came next.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe dental implant failure and starting again. Writers lost implants soon after placement or after nine, eleven and fifteen good years, and their stories touch on smoking and vaping, type 2 diabetes, night-time grinding, a chewed-ice habit, gum disease, a dry mouth from Sjögren's syndrome, radiation for tonsil cancer, a bone medicine, a blood thinner, depression, grief, and an implant that pushed into the sinus. They include a long-haul trucker, a trumpet player, a taxi driver, a sheep farmer three hours from a specialist, a dental hygienist of twenty-four years, a mother breastfeeding a nine-week-old, and a daughter helping a father with memory problems, writing from Thessaloniki to Tampa and Nairobi to Dunedin. Treatments include bone grafts, a sinus lift, bone taken from the hip, mini implants, four implants holding a bridge, and an implant placed too soon after an infection. Some describe a cheap trip abroad, a guarantee that fell apart, and dentists who could not identify the brand. One man was never given a reason, and several ended with a bridge, a denture or a gap they chose to keep. Many describe what a second opinion changed.

Who it's for

For anyone told their dental implant has to come out, for those planning a first implant who want better questions to ask, and for family members helping someone through repeat treatment.
