From the Introduction
The word was lesion, and it sat in the third paragraph of a scan report about a body that felt perfectly well. Most people in this book spent an hour lying still inside a knocking, humming tube, then far longer waiting for someone to explain what had been seen. The writers here describe the price, the relief, the follow-up appointments and the questions they wish they had asked first.

A note before you read

This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe whole-body MRI scans, paid for privately, given as birthday presents, offered by employers or scheduled every year by genetics teams. Some booked out of curiosity or after an advert, others after a friend died at thirty, a mother died of a bleed in the brain, or a wife put down a deposit behind her husband's back. A lorry driver in Cork, a physics teacher in Gothenburg, an oncology nurse in Nairobi, a family doctor in Berlin, a rancher in Montana who drove four hours to reach the machine and a miner on a two-weeks-on roster are among them, from Columbus to Seoul. Findings include a fatty liver, a small kidney tumour, a pancreatic cyst, fibroids, gallstones, a tiny thyroid cancer the writer chose to watch, and a widened aorta that led to a whole family being tested. Some live with scheduled scans because of Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Hodgkin lymphoma or a rare family tumour. Others describe claustrophobia, a metal knee that left a blank patch, follow-up bills and a weekend spent asking a chatbot about a report. Outcomes are mixed: one scan led to five more appointments, two clinics wrote two different reports, and one man's normal scan was followed by cancer.

Who it's for

For anyone weighing up a private whole-body scan, waiting on a report full of unfamiliar words, or sitting beside a partner or parent while they wait.
