From the Introduction
A small cloth bag of rice bran squeezed in warm water at a grandmother's bathroom sink in Sacramento. A dark glass bottle of camellia oil beside a mother's mirror. A sticky note on the mirror that says only: one thing. The writers here describe Japanese-style skincare as they actually lived it, with fewer steps, gentler hands, daily sunscreen, and plenty of honest second thoughts.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe Japanese skincare, the slow routine of soft cleansing, thin layers of lotion and daily sunscreen often sold as J-Beauty. People came to it through cracked winter cheeks, chin bumps under a surgical mask, shaving rash, eczema, rosacea, melasma after a second baby, dark marks after acne and a patch test that showed a fragrance allergy. The writers include a plumber, a theatre nurse, a welder in the prairie wind, a chef in Naples, a swimmer, a flight attendant with six thumb-sized bottles, a pharmacy counter worker, a carer for a mother with dementia and a woman starting a routine alongside her teenage daughter, from Duluth to Kagoshima and Lagos to Galway. They write about double cleansing, sunscreen without a white cast, pump bottles for arthritic hands, sheet masks on Sunday nights, facial massage for a clenched jaw, routines during pregnancy and on hormone therapy, and a spreadsheet tracking every dollar. Some found a small ritual that carried them through grief or a hard year. The disappointments are here too: a brightening cream that burned, rice water left to sour on the counter, a konjac sponge used too hard, acne that needed more than gentleness, and a woman who walked away after two years and eleven bottles.
