From the Introduction
The leaflet stayed in one woman's pocket for four days before her first treatment, and the room she finally walked into was quiet and ordinary, with a cannula, a blanket and a nurse asking about breakfast. Most of the people in this book had pictured straps and a rubber bit. The writers here describe the distance between the film version of ECT and the mornings they actually lived through.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), from fasting mornings to the long view years later. Writers came to it through depression that had outlasted eleven medicines, illness six weeks after a first baby, nine nights without sleep in a manic episode, the conviction of having already died, and severe illness during pregnancy or alongside Parkinson's. They include a truck driver, a cellist worried for her hands, an electrician fielding wiring jokes, a trial lawyer who remembers for a living, a crane operator eighty metres up, a minister of forty-one years, an 84-year-old ship's carpenter and a 19-year-old signing her own form. A husband, a boyfriend and a mother in a hospital car park write from the other side of the doors. Places range from Leeds to Bengaluru and Osaka to San Antonio. Writers describe anaesthetic and muscle relaxants, headaches, insurance calls, a consent form in a second language, a sign language interpreter in recovery, a hijab kept in place, Ramadan fasting and maintenance treatment every third Thursday for six years. Some returned to courtrooms, kitchens and classrooms. Not every story ends well: one man found it did not work for him, one woman stopped after four treatments, another man said no, and others describe lasting memory gaps or losses treatment did not touch.
Who it's for
For anyone weighing ECT for themselves or someone close, for families waiting outside treatment rooms, and for people living afterwards with memory gaps or questions about why it did not help.
