From the Introduction
Nineteen sunscreen tubes in a bathroom drawer, eleven of them almost full, each one tried and set aside for the grey film it left behind. Others remember a lemon in the kitchen at midnight, an aunt's comment across a crowded hall, or a doctor who said rosacea was impossible on dark skin. The writers here describe years of guessing, the clinicians who finally understood their skin, and the slow fading of marks.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe caring for brown and Black skin, from teenage acne to skin in the sixties. Many came to it through dark marks that outlasted the spots, melasma after a second baby, eczema that showed up grey and purple rather than red, razor bumps under a police department's shaving rule, keloids after an ear piercing, vitiligo, and a dark neck that led to a blood test. The writers include a history teacher in Chicago, a lawn crew boss in Phoenix who had never worn sunscreen, a college defensive back whose back breaks out every football season, a dental nurse in Manchester, and a taxi driver in Port of Spain whose friend spotted a mark on his foot at the cricket. They live from Lagos and Accra to Toronto, Karachi, Cairo, Honolulu and Bridgetown. Treatments include tretinoin, hydroquinone, azelaic acid, niacinamide, laser hair removal, microneedling, patch testing and video visits, alongside a great deal of plain moisturiser and sunscreen. Several describe mistakes: scrubbing, lemon juice, a lightening cream from a market stall used for eleven years, a chemical peel that left dark patches. Many end up spending less and doing less. Marks often faded slowly, some changes were only partial, and a few writers are still working on scars and patches years later.
Who it's for
For people with brown and Black skin tired of advice built around lighter skin, for parents guiding a child's first routine, and for anyone weighing a treatment or product.
