From the Introduction
A flat cardboard box carried in from the porch, and a numbered tray held up to the light in the exact shape of their own teeth. The writers here describe straightening their smiles by post: the sore first days of each new tray, the lisp, the lost cases, and the retainers that nearly all of them wish they had understood sooner.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe at-home clear aligners, ordered online and posted to the door after impressions at the kitchen table or a scan at a local studio. Writers wanted to smile in wedding photos, close a family gap, fix teeth that drifted after a lost retainer, or stop hiding their mouth at work. They include a night-shift nurse, an oilfield worker on two-week rotations, a saxophonist, a chef who tastes all day, a rugby player, a casino dealer who grinds his teeth, a woman of sixty-seven with arthritic fingers, an autistic student, a widower learning to smile again and a man fasting through Ramadan. They write from Leeds to Christchurch and Mexico City to Calgary. Several saw a dentist first and found a cavity or gum disease, and one man was turned down at sixty-eight and was glad of it. Daily life includes a toddler chewing a tray, a tray lost in the surf, someone else's trays in the box and spreadsheets of costs. Not every case went smoothly: a company closed halfway through, a teenager's teeth moved back after skipped retainers, a gum receded, trays cracked from clenching, rushed tray changes hurt, and one bite stayed the same while the front looked better. Others report straight teeth five years on.
Who it's for
For anyone thinking about straightening their teeth by post, anyone partway through a box of trays or unsure about retainers, and parents asked by a teenager to order a set.
