From the Introduction
A mat unrolled on the bed, a small loop strapped round a knee, a light that comes on, and twenty minutes in which nothing at all can be felt. Most people in this book noticed no sensation, and many could not say afterwards whether anything had changed. The writers here describe what they used, what it cost, and how they tried to tell the device apart from everything else they were doing.

A note before you read
This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.
About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, from cheap wands and borrowed mats to a bone stimulator a surgeon prescribed. A city bus driver in Manchester with a sore lower back, a surgical nurse with heel pain, a retired electrician in Dayton putting off a knee replacement, a builder in Cardiff whose broken shin was slow to mend, a taxi driver in Accra with sciatica, a paramedic who could not sleep and a dancer back from a stress fracture are among them, with voices from Cape Town to Edinburgh. Writers bring rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, diabetic nerve pain, period pain, migraines, tinnitus, restless legs, a frozen shoulder and exhaustion after an infection. Alongside the devices sit physiotherapy, injections, surgery, stretching, giving up cigarettes and a long insurance fight. A physiotherapist tests it on her own elbow, a pharmacist on his own back, and a retired electrical engineer keeps an honest notebook. Many accounts end without a clear benefit: a mat that left one writer in debt, an expensive sale made in a Dublin sitting room, and a woman whose oncology team said no. Most could not say which of several changes did the work, and several concluded that the exercises mattered most.
Who it's for
For anyone curious about a PEMF mat or loop, already using one, or looking into it for a parent, who wants plain accounts of cost, doubt and results before spending money.
