From the Introduction
A damp face over the bathroom sink, a towel set down for a moment, and a row of small bottles waiting their turn. A few drops of toner, a gentle pat of serum, one more thin layer before the skin can dry. The writers here describe skin flooding as a daily habit, including the bottles that stung and the routines they cut back.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe skin flooding, the routine of pressing thin, water-rich layers onto damp skin and sealing them with a cream. People came to it with cheeks flaking by lunch in an overheated classroom, ashy skin in the harmattan, knuckles that bled on a winter school bus, razor trouble, and skin that was oily and dehydrated at once. The writers include a delivery driver, a swimming coach, a chef by the grill, a barber in Accra, a dairy farmer, cabin crew in hotel bathrooms, night-shift nurses and a junior doctor, a security guard, a makeup artist and a new mother with three minutes while her baby naps, from Tromsø to Durban and Minneapolis to Kuala Lumpur. Some carried it on from a mother's or father's habit with coconut oil or lotion. Others used it alongside eczema, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, isotretinoin, PCOS acne treatment and radiotherapy, with their doctors and nurses deciding what was allowed. Many began with six or eight layers and settled on two or three. Not every account is a success: a rose essence and a sale-table serum caused reactions, acids used too eagerly cost one paramedic three weeks, it did not fade one woman's dark spots, and a barista saw no difference after six weeks and stopped.

Who it's for

For anyone with dry, tight or dehydrated skin who is curious about layering on damp skin, and who wants to hear the stings and the shortcuts as well as the comfort.
