From the Introduction
A pregnancy test on the edge of the sink, and beside it a shelf of serums and creams nobody had questioned until that morning. One writer had been using retinol for two weeks without knowing; another made a nervous list with her shelf at number three, in capitals. The writers here describe sorting products into piles, asking the same question twice, and living with skin that changed anyway.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe caring for skin before, during and after pregnancy. Some began while trying to conceive and cleared their shelves early; others found retinol, salicylic acid or tea tree oil already in use and went looking for answers, often finding two websites with two different ones. The skin changes are wide: melasma at fourteen weeks, chin breakouts at eight weeks, eczema and psoriasis flaring, rosacea without the usual gel, stretch marks despite a tub of cream bought the first week, prickly heat in Dubai and cracked hands on a children's ward. The writers include a hairstylist in Atlanta, a tram driver in Lisbon, an aesthetician working pregnant on both sides of the treatment bed, a midwife on night shifts, a nineteen-year-old scrolling for advice, a woman in Buenos Aires having a child on her own, a mother of twins in Hamburg, and a woman who conceived after four years of fertility treatment. Choices about laser hair removal, hair colour, nail salons, tattoos and a grandmother's ghee and turmeric appear. Several stories show why itching or swelling earned a call: itchy soles at thirty weeks, a mole that changed shape, a wedding ring that would not come off. Not every worry proved serious, some marks stayed, and many writers ended with a few products and a sunscreen.
