From the Introduction
A steak cut into coin-sized pieces, a glass of water after every bite, a quick look round the table to see who noticed. Many people in this book ate that way for years under other labels: reflux, anxiety, a slow eater. The writers here describe the long road to a name for eosinophilic oesophagitis and the daily work of eating with it.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE), the condition behind food that sticks on the way down. Many writers spent years being told it was reflux, anxiety, age or an eating disorder; one dispatcher carried the reflux label for twelve years. Contributors range from a seventeen-year-old dreading a dry turkey sandwich at school lunch to a newly diagnosed eighty-year-old who kept port cranes running, and include a sous chef, a sheep farmer two hours from an emergency department, a nurse, a black-cab driver, a college wide receiver, and parents of a toddler, twin girls and two affected brothers. Places run from Columbus to Cork, Pune to Dunedin. Treatments include swallowed steroids, dilation, repeat scopes, elimination diets that traced wheat, milk or soy, and an injection one writer waited most of a year to get past insurance. Everyday life fills the book: Ramadan fasting, holiday tamales, birthday cupcakes, client dinners, a laminated phrase card for travel and a school residential trip. The outcomes are mixed. A joiner still catches food most weeks after six years of treatment, one writer stopped her medicine and ended up in an emergency department, and a writer in remission still eats carefully. Most describe relief at finally hearing the name.

Who it's for

For anyone living with EoE or still searching for a name for food that sticks, parents managing a child's diet and school meals, and partners who share the table.
