From the Introduction
A back tooth cracked on a piece of crusty bread three days before a holiday in Phuket. A plastic bag of X-rays went into a handbag beside a boarding pass. The writers here describe the quote that sent them overseas for their teeth, what the clinic included and left out, and how their mouths felt once they were home.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe travelling abroad for dental work, from a single crown to full-arch implants. Writers went because of quotes that made them cry, insurance that barely covered teeth, a cracked tooth before a holiday, a wedding deadline or twenty years of fear of the chair. They include a delivery driver, an Army veteran, a farmer, a dental nurse, a call-centre worker with a toothache, a single mother who took out a loan, and a widow of seventy-four flying alone for the first time. They travel from Leeds to Istanbul, Yuma to Los Algodones, Berlin to Szczecin, Accra to Istanbul and across the causeway from Singapore to Johor Bahru. Treatments include veneers, crowns, bridges, bone grafts, dentures, braces in Valencia, bonding from a grandmother's dentist in Croatia and full-mouth work under sedation in Budapest. Many describe spreadsheets, agencies, deposits, going with a spouse or an elderly parent, and finding a local dentist willing to help afterwards. Some outcomes were hard: eight root canals after veneers, gums that receded, an infection three weeks later, two implants that failed, a crown that sat high, a jaw that never felt right and a deposit never returned. Others saved thousands and say the work has held up for years.

Who it's for

For anyone weighing a dental trip abroad, anyone back home with work that does not feel right, and the partners and grown children who travel along to sit in the waiting room.
