From the Introduction
Thirty-six pounds a week went over the counter of the shop by a Nottingham warehouse gate, and the picker spending it only knew because he finally added it up. A secondary teacher in Leeds blamed her pupils for two years of Saturday headaches. The writers here describe living on coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout powder and caffeine tablets, and what happened when they counted.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe heavy caffeine and energy drink use. What brought people to it was ordinary: exams, night shifts, a new baby, long hauls, lambing season, busy season, startup hours and gigs until dawn. The writers include a long-haul trucker, a builder whose dentist added up the sugar, a barista, a junior doctor, a firefighter driving home after a twenty-four, a mine haul-truck operator on a two-weeks-on roster, a marathon runner, a university rower, a retired headmaster with a brown teapot, and a widow in Bloemfontein filling quiet evenings with cups. They write from Columbus to Colombo, Lagos, Kuala Lumpur and Lisbon. They describe palpitations and a normal ECG, a teenager fainting at soccer practice, a burning stomach, heartburn, migraines, panic in a Monday meeting, a short fuse on a nightclub door, sleeping pills to undo the day's coffee, energy drinks mixed with vodka, a gas station bottle that led to urgent care, a fat burner, cardiac rehab after a stent, and a mother finding cans hidden under her son's bed. Some quit cold and paid for it with headaches; others cut back slowly with a doctor, a diary or a bet with the head chef. A few are still working on it, and one simply cut back and kept the morning cup.

Who it's for

For anyone who has lost count of their cans or cups, and for the parents, partners and coworkers who keep the recycling bin tally and wonder what to say.
