Fifty first-person accounts describe paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, the firm, enlarging fat that some people developed after fat-freezing treatment. Many first took it for a hernia, muscle, perimenopause, weight gain or swelling, and several were told by their clinic to wait or offered another round of freezing. The bulges appear on stomachs and flanks, but also under the chin, on an upper arm, inside a knee, below the buttock crease and on a man's chest. The writers include a med spa receptionist, a seamstress who measured her own body, a mechanical engineer in Munich who collected data, a dairy farmer explaining it to his teenagers, a paramedic, a wedding photographer and a surgical nurse of thirty-one years, from Monterrey and Mumbai to Lyon and Honolulu. They describe photo diaries, ultrasounds, an unneeded procedure for a suspected lipoma, three surgeons with three opinions, liposuction and in one case more than liposuction, months of swelling, scar therapy, four insurance refusals and bills in the thousands. Some clinics handled it well; others never offered a refund. Outcomes vary: some are mostly fixed but not perfect, one man chose to live with his lump, others describe long waits for a surgeon, and some write about the toll on their mood and confidence.
