From the Introduction
A flatmate in Barcelona began leaving a glass of water and a towel on the closed toilet lid each night, because she so often found her friend in a hot bath at four in the morning. Scalding showers were the only thing that settled the sickness. The writers here describe years of vomiting, normal test results and missed questions before anyone connected it to the cannabis they used to relax.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, the cycles of vomiting some long-term cannabis users develop. Writers came to it through joints after a shift, dabs, delta-8, sleep gummies after a husband died, a medical card for a worn spine, cannabis for menopausal hot flashes and cannabis that helped one man eat through chemotherapy. They include a budtender who once recommended it for nausea, an emergency nurse, a pharmacy technician, a chef, a wedding planner, a hair stylist who was pregnant, a veteran with nightmares and a parent who first noticed the water bill, from Phoenix and Montego Bay to Cork, Johannesburg and Bologna. Many describe a removed gallbladder, scans, gastroscopies, eleven emergency visits in a year, labels of anxiety, cyclic vomiting or a psychological cause, and one doctor who finally sat down to explain. Some tried hot pepper cream, an injection in the emergency department, a drip, or a long break to test the link. Daily life is here too: lost jobs, explaining sick days to a manager, friends who kept smoking. The hardest outcomes are told plainly: kidneys under strain, a burn scar from a shower, a cracked rib, repeated relapse, and one writer still using at the time of writing. Most describe stopping completely as what finally ended the cycle.
Who it's for
For anyone sick for months without an answer who uses cannabis, the parents and partners watching from the hallway, and clinicians who want a patient's view of being told the tests are normal.
