From the Introduction
A pair of earbuds broke in Bengaluru, and for a week their owner was too lazy to replace them; by the end of it an auntie had told her all about her knee. Elsewhere, a lorry driver's dog made it plain she did not need a podcast. The writers here describe taking the sound out of an ordinary walk and noticing what was left.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe silent walking: leaving the music, podcasts and calls behind and going out with nothing in the ears. Some came by accident, others after a heart attack and bypass, a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, high blood pressure, a stroke, Parkinson's, a lost pregnancy, a wife's death, breast cancer scans, menopause, depression or a smoking habit of thirty-nine years. The writers include an emergency department nurse walking home after shifts, a night-shift warehouse worker at dawn, a fly-in fly-out miner in the Pilbara, a taxi driver with a sore back, a music producer resting his ears, a photographer who put the camera down, a mother of three with ten minutes before anyone wakes, and a homesick college student. They write from Dhaka to Dunedin, Lagos to Winnipeg. Settings range across monsoon markets in Mumbai, a guarded routine in Johannesburg, a Cornish lane, a forest in Nairobi, a winter treadmill. Many began awkward or bored; some turned it into a prayer walk, a lunch loop or a father and son walking without talking. The other side gets room too: for one student the quiet got too loud at first, a man with Parkinson's found it did not suit him, and a woman in Accra tried it for a month and went back to her playlist.
Who it's for
For anyone curious about walking without earbuds, people looking for a simple daily habit during stress, grief or recovery, and those who want honest accounts of both liking and disliking it.
