From the Introduction
An alert button kept for two years in a kitchen drawer with the rubber bands, a patch of black ice on the way to buy the paper, a mango tree climbed one season too many. In these pages a broken hip nearly always begins on a floor. The writers here describe the operation, the first steps with help, and the long, uneven weeks of walking again.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe hip fracture and recovery, from the fall itself to a year on. Many writers are in their seventies, eighties and nineties, including a wheat farmer who slipped off a grain truck at 91 and a woman of 93 who has broken both hips; others are younger, among them a dental hygienist hurt in a crash, a nurse whose running ended in a fracture at 33 and a cyclist hit by a van at 28. Sons, daughters and a daughter-in-law write as caregivers, including for parents with dementia. They write from Tucson to Naxos and Saskatoon to Nairobi. Treatments include surgery within days, a second operation, a break around an old hip replacement and two months on a rehabilitation ward. Writers describe frightening hallucinations in hospital, a blood clot, fear of pain pills, Parkinson's, years of steroid tablets and osteoporosis found after the fall. Daily life runs throughout: a long-handled shoehorn, a husband learning to cook, a balance class, a ferry and a helicopter from an island, six days waiting for a bed. Not every outcome is bright. One daughter describes her mother choosing comfort rather than surgery, and missing her now; some writers walk with a stick for good, and several carry the fright long after the bone has healed.
