From the Introduction
A midwife's hand moves across a pregnant belly, pauses, and finds the head up near the ribs and the bottom down low. Within days there were leaflets, moxa sticks, frozen peas, a booked appointment and a long list of questions. The writers here describe what they chose next, what their babies did anyway, and who listened to them along the way.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe breech pregnancy and external cephalic version, the hands-on attempt to turn a baby head-down. Most found out late: at a thirty-six-week growth scan, at a final check at thirty-eight weeks, or with one little foot late at night. The writers include an accountant, a Year Two teacher whose class had plenty of advice, a midwife of sixteen years, a doula, a nurse far from home in Doha, fathers holding hands and talking to the bump, and a mother of three boys expecting her fourth. They write from Leeds to Lagos and from Bergen to Cape Town. Some had a turn that worked within minutes, a second try under a spinal, or a turn after an earlier caesarean. Others tried moxibustion and everything on the internet, said no to the turn, chose a planned caesarean, or drove ninety minutes each way to find a team for a planned breech birth. Twins, a low placenta, low fluid, O negative blood, a fibroid and finger pricks four times a day all shaped decisions. Not everything went to plan: one baby turned back, one heartbeat dropped and led to an emergency caesarean, one mother bled after a successful turn, and another was caught out by sadness afterwards.
Who it's for
For anyone told late in pregnancy that their baby is breech and weighing a turn, a planned caesarean or a breech birth, and for the partners, doulas and midwives beside them.
