From the Introduction
The red numbers on an oven clock, an emergency call made in socks, a toddler going stiff in a booster seat at the kitchen table. Most families in this book had never seen a seizure before the night a fever brought one. The writers here describe that first frightening minute, the ambulance or the drive, and the weeks of watching that came after it.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe febrile seizures, told by mothers, fathers, grandparents, a childminder, a preschool teacher, adoptive and foster families, and adults who had them as children. The settings are ordinary: a birthday party just after the piñata, a church nursery, a furniture store on a Saturday, the back seat on a Houston freeway, a mountain cabin forty minutes from a clinic, a video call to a ship's engineer nine thousand kilometres away. Places run from Columbus to Nakuru County and Pune to Bogotá. Writers include an emergency nurse and a family doctor who found their training deserted them, a firefighter whose son's seizure lasted twenty-five minutes, and a mother in Lagos whose son tested negative for malaria. They describe ambulances, a lumbar puncture, a doctor who explained why no scan was needed, rescue medicine in a kitchen drawer, fever charts and a temperature spreadsheet, grandparents with old advice, and one father's questions about timing after vaccinations. Many children had one seizure and none since. Others had several, and a few families learned it was not only a fever: one child was later diagnosed with epilepsy, another needed specialist care, and one adult writer describes a longer story after her childhood seizures.

Who it's for

For parents and grandparents shaken by a first febrile seizure, childminders and teachers who may be in the room, and adults who want to understand what their family went through.
