From the Introduction
A glass sits just outside the edge of what can be seen, and a hand knocks it over. A young man walks into door frames and his mates call him Bambi, and a girl invents reasons not to fetch milk at dusk. The writers here describe retinitis pigmentosa from the inside: the night blindness nobody believed, the narrowing sides of the view, and the slow work of adapting.

This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe retinitis pigmentosa, the inherited eye conditions that take night vision and narrow the field of sight. Writers were called clumsy, lazy at dusk or overtired for years; one was treated for glaucoma and dry eyes for nine years, and another was diagnosed at seventy-one. They include a forklift driver let go after nineteen years, a nurse on night wards, a science teacher counting steps to the stairwell, a software tester, a railway signalman, a hairdresser who hid it for twenty years, a student starting college, parents of children with X-linked RP, a partner and a grown son, writing from Pune to Aberdeen and Accra to Osaka. They describe genetic testing and counselling, Usher syndrome and hearing aids, fears about passing it on, cataract surgery, swelling treated with drops, vitamin A under supervision, a trial screening that ended in a no, a retinal implant, and one woman who qualified for gene therapy. Daily life means handing over the car keys, learning a white cane, a guide dog, screen readers, braille, tinted lenses, a tandem bicycle and cooking by touch. Some lost most or all of their sight, one fell down the stairs, and several describe depression, while most were told nothing yet restores what has gone.

Who it's for

For anyone newly diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa or struggling in the dark, for parents of an affected child, and for partners and families learning how to help without taking over.
