From the Introduction
A cereal aisle under flat white lights, a long corridor at work, the top of a station escalator: most people in this book can name the place where a still floor first began to sway. Test after test came back normal. The writers here describe the months of searching for a name, the mix of relief and grief at hearing PPPD, and the slow return to places they had given up.

A note before you read

This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe persistent postural-perceptual dizziness, the lingering sense of motion or unsteadiness that for these writers followed an inner ear problem, a concussion, migraine, a virus, a faint or one rough flight. They include a barber in Atlanta, a truck driver kept off the road for over a year, a hairdresser surrounded by mirrors, a church pianist who could no longer read music, an offshore safety supervisor who lost his North Sea job, a police officer after an advanced driving course, a resident doctor in Mumbai, a 16-year-old soccer player and a 78-year-old living alone in Tampa. Places run from Pune to Aberdeen and Nairobi to Kingston, Jamaica. Many were told for months that it was menopause, anxiety, new-baby exhaustion or nothing at all. They describe screens, open-plan offices, assembly lines and supermarket aisles; balance exercises, therapy, medication, migraine treatment and daily logs; and help from employers, a university, children who learned to walk slowly, and a head chef who first mentioned the name. Recovery is uneven. Some are nearly free of symptoms, others live with good and bad days, one man found it came back after he thought he was done, and several left jobs or cut their hours.

Who it's for

For people living with dizziness that has outlasted its cause, those newly given the name PPPD, and the family members, employers and clinicians who want to understand what cannot be seen.
