From the Introduction
A five-month-old kept her left hand in a fist that never opened, even in sleep. Another baby only ever reached with his right hand, the left tucked up by his chest like a small secret. The writers here describe the corridors and waiting rooms that followed, and the lives they built around therapy, equipment, stubbornness and a great deal of ordinary laughter.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe cerebral palsy across a whole life, from a baby born at twenty-six weeks and a newborn cooled after a difficult birth to a son of forty-three living with his mother of seventy-one. Parents, brothers and sisters, a wife, grandparents, an aunt who became guardian, two mothers who adopted, and adults with CP all write, including a man diagnosed at thirty-four after a lifetime of being called clumsy, from Leicester and Lagos to Pune, Karachi and Mexico City. Treatments and decisions include Botox injections for tight calves, hip surgery, selective dorsal rhizotomy, a baclofen pump, a feeding tube, early intervention, riding and swimming, and one family's costly stem cell treatment overseas. Daily life means school meetings about a separate class, a fight with insurance over a standing frame, a mother carrying her fifteen-year-old up three flights of stairs, summer camp, dancing in a power chair, and telling a child what she has. The book is honest about harder ground: seizures that began at four, an eye problem missed for years, pain in middle age, strained marriages, a fever at eleven months that changed one family's life, and parents still unsure who will care for an adult child when they are gone.
Who it's for
For parents, siblings, grandparents and carers of a child with cerebral palsy, and for adults with CP thinking about pain, work, relationships and growing older.
