From the Introduction
A small wet gulp in the dark, a pause, then a warm trickle down the shoulder: most parents in this book could describe the sound without thinking. They kept burp cloths in every room, held their babies upright for twenty minutes after each feed and stopped reading the internet at night. The writers here describe the long weeks of spit-up and crying, the advice that came from every direction, and the ordinary day it finally stopped.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe infant reflux and the months of difficult feeds that came with it. Parents came to it through a three-week-old who brought back most of every bottle, a preemie home from the NICU and still struggling to feed, a daughter with silent reflux who never spat up at all, and twins where only one was affected. The writers include a dental office manager, a delivery driver, a mechanic, a line cook, a soldier's wife alone on base, a grandmother raising her grandson, two adoptive fathers and a single mother, from Columbus and Pune to Lagos, Valencia and a ranch outside Billings. They describe slower bottle feeds, cutting dairy while nursing, hydrolysed formula and WIC paperwork, acid medicine and later weaning off it, a tongue-tie release, a swallow study, six months with a feeding tube and a fundoplication. Daily life means night shifts, returning to work at twelve weeks, a cross-country flight, a hurricane and an inclined sleeper one mother wishes she had never bought. Not every account is gentle: one baby was admitted for dehydration, green vomit at nineteen days led to surgery, one infant came to fear the bottle, one mother describes depression, and some families never learned whether it was colic or reflux. Many say time helped most.

Who it's for

For parents, grandparents and carers of a baby who spits up, screams through feeds or barely sleeps, and for anyone weighing a formula change, a medicine or a referral.
