From the Introduction
A cardigan hung on a bank teller's chair in Nairobi through every hot afternoon, and a dad in Auckland blamed sore knees and bad forecasts so he would not have to take his shirt off at the beach. The roll above the bra band followed people into tailors' shops and wedding photographs. The writers here describe deciding whether to have it lifted, and what the weeks afterwards were really like.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe the bra-line back lift, an operation to remove loose skin and fat from the back and close the scar where a bra band sits. Writers came to it after losing ninety pounds, after gastric bypass or a prescribed weight loss injection, after two pregnancies, after bodybuilding cuts, or simply slim with rolls that exercise never moved. They include a nurse on night shifts, a chef, a long-haul trucker, a steelworker, a school bus driver, a hairdresser, a construction worker and a woman of seventy, from Columbus and Wichita to Cork, Pune and Christchurch. Many write about the practical side: six weeks without cigarettes before surgery, being told to wait for their weight to settle, insurance denials and payment plans, the waiting list or paying privately, surgery abroad, and a heart doctor's clearance for a man on a blood thinner. Recovery is told week by week, with drains, compression garments, a recliner, swelling, lymphatic massage and silicone sheets. Several combined the lift with an arm lift or tummy tuck. Outcomes are mixed and told honestly: fluid under the scar, a wound that opened, a scar wider than expected, months of numbness, an uneven side needing a touch-up, and one writer who went to three consultations and chose not to go ahead.
Who it's for
For anyone weighing a bra-line back lift, booked in for one or wondering whether their recovery is normal, and for the partners and family members who will help through the first weeks.
