Contributors include a long-haul trucker in Nebraska, a firefighter taken off the engine, a flight attendant, a conference interpreter, a live sound engineer, an intensive care nurse, a ship's engineer four days out at sea and a sixteen-year-old in Year 11, from Columbus and Karachi to Monterrey, Nairobi and Seoul. Writers describe steroid tablets, injections through the eardrum, fifteen sessions in a pressure chamber, steroids that sent one man's blood sugar soaring, insurance denials and going in with no insurance at all. Some learned of a cause: a scan that found something else, a small stroke, a loss two weeks after COVID, a pop while blowing a nose, the way up from a dive. Life afterwards includes a sign next to a shop till, a seat on a wife's good side, a bone conduction headband, an implant switched on and a yearly hearing test. Outcomes vary widely: some were back to normal within ten days, some recovered about half, and others never got hearing back in that ear.
