From the Introduction
Nine point one: the number sat on a phone screen in a grocery store parking lot, beside two bags and a rotisserie chicken, and its owner read it three times before anyone had called. The writers here describe opening results before a doctor had seen them, the long hours that followed, and what they wish someone had told them first.

A note before you read
This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.
About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe getting test results through a patient portal, often before anyone had explained them. The results range across PSA tests, thyroid panels, an HIV screen read on a Sunday morning, a mammogram flagged for additional imaging, pregnancy screening, liver numbers, an A1C, a coeliac antibody test, lung and thyroid nodules, a calcium score, BRCA testing in a man of fifty-nine, a child's blood lead level and a needle-stick injury. The writers include a Manchester bus driver, a retired surgical nurse who knew every word and was still hurt by them, a farmer whose daughter set the portal up, a former medical secretary reading her own cytology report, a woman translating results from Spanish with a red dictionary, and a seventy-six-year-old who asked for paper. They write from Kuala Lumpur to Gothenburg, Tel Aviv to Wellington. Recurring moments include words like degenerative, positive or hyperintensities that sounded worse than they turned out to be, refreshing the page all day, a vague message to call the office, reading a parent's or teenager's results for them. Some found the portal gave them words to push for care, or caught something early. Others had harder news: cancer diagnoses, a positive ANA with no clear answer yet, and a wife reading her husband's scan reports through his last fourteen months.
Who it's for
For anyone waiting on a result or nervous about opening one, people who read a parent's, partner's or child's records for them, and clinicians curious how results land at home.
