From the Introduction
A compression garment pulled tight in a fitting room, a belted uniform jacket that sat right on the flare of the lowest ribs, a steel-boned corset laced up at weekends. The writers here describe deciding to have those lower ribs reshaped, a first week of recovery that most found harder than expected, and a result that was rarely simply good or bad.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe rib remodeling, the surgery that removes or reshapes the lowest ribs to narrow the waist. Some came to it through corsets, drag and cosplay or the competition stage; others after pregnancy, a hundred-pound weight loss or fifteen years of wanting. The contributors include a dental hygienist, a flight attendant in a fitted uniform, a classic physique competitor, a surf instructor, a church choir director, a non-binary graphic designer, and partners and a mother writing from the bedside. They write from Miami to Medellin, Leeds to Lagos and Seoul to Perth, and several travelled to Istanbul, Dubai or Mexico for lower quotes. Writers describe choosing a surgeon, being turned down, losing weight and stopping nicotine first, combining the operation with liposuction, recovery hotels, drains, borrowed money and keeping it from family or church. Daily life runs through it all: not lifting a laundry basket, getting back into the water, wedding dress fittings, filming recovery for strangers online. Some stories are hard, with a seroma that needed draining, a partly collapsed lung, an infection, a night back in hospital, an uneven side that needed a second operation, keloid scars, numbness and pain still felt more than a year later. A few walked out of consultations and never had it at all.
Who it's for
For anyone considering rib remodeling or recovering from it, and for the partners, parents and friends who will be learning the drains, driving slowly home and listening to the doubts.
