From the Introduction
A finger kept under the line, a nursing student frightened of misreading a drug chart, 'sourdoh' chalked on the board outside a Bristol bakery. These are the daily workarounds of the people in this book, many of whom were called lazy or careless for years. The writers here describe finally getting a name for the difficulty, and the slow return of confidence once they stopped hiding it.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe dyslexia, written by adults, teenagers, parents, a sister, a retired headmaster who now tutors and teachers who are dyslexic themselves. Many were told they were lazy or careless, and several learned the word only in adulthood, at 35, at 49, or informally in their sixties. Writers include an electrician in Cardiff, a lawyer who hid it through law school, an aircraft maintenance engineer, a police officer in Dallas dreading reports, a chef in London, a translator in Bergen, a Nashville musician who plays by ear, a carpenter who told his family at 74 and a hairstylist who finished her first whole book at 46. Places stretch from Johannesburg to Gothenburg and Manila to Truro. Parents describe schools that would not assess, two years lost to waiting, adoption, early birth, a second language and the cost of a tutor. Support varies: extra time, laptops and scribes, audiobooks, touch-typing, a mother's kitchen-table lessons, adult literacy classes, a college disability office. Some found dyscalculia or ADHD alongside it. Some things disappointed: coloured overlays did nothing for one family, a special font made hardly any difference, and a mother is still unsure whether five months of vision therapy helped. Several writers still find reading tiring and expect to for life.

Who it's for

For adults who suspect they have hidden dyslexia for years, parents pushing for an assessment, teenagers tired of being called slow, and the teachers, tutors and partners alongside them.
