From the Introduction
A small cushion rides in a backpack, on a back seat, under an arm at the cinema, and its owner eats standing at the counter while everyone else sits down. To nobody else in the room does a chair look like a threat. The writers here describe pudendal neuralgia: years of being told it was something simpler, the embarrassment of saying where it hurt, and what slowly helped.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe pudendal neuralgia, a nerve pain that made sitting the hardest part of the day. Writers trace it to many places: long weekend rides on a road bike, nine hours at a lorry wheel, sixteen-hour harvest days on a tractor seat, a fall from a ladder, hip and prostate surgery, childbirth, pelvic radiation years earlier, fourteen hours of gaming, or nothing at all. Many were first told it was thrush, a pulled muscle or a spine problem; one counted eleven doctors over almost three years. The voices include a yoga teacher, a professional dancer, a college rower, a security guard, a ride-share driver with no insurance, a coach driver between Cape Town and Johannesburg, a pharmacist and a couple writing together, from Leeds and Poznan to Bogotá, Doha and Seoul. Writers describe pelvic health physiotherapy, Kegels that made things worse, nerve blocks, medicines, acupuncture, cushions, standing desks and surgery, which one writer credits with giving him his life back and another says made things worse. Daily life means feeding a baby standing up, adapting prayer, an open-plan office, a pregnancy and marriages under strain. Not everyone has found relief: several are still in pain years on, and a twelve-year account describes the pain growing smaller rather than leaving.

Who it's for

For people living with pelvic or sitting pain that has gone unexplained or finally been given this name, and for partners who want to understand a condition that is hard to talk about.
