From the Introduction
The left side of a coach driver's face looks about ten years older than the right, after twenty years beside the driver's window. A builder who laughed at moisturiser all his life ends up buying a tub because his daughter, a nurse, told him to. The writers here describe the shelf above the sink growing from a bar of soap to cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen, and what that did and did not change.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe men looking after their skin, often for the first time. What started it was usually small: a barber's comment, a partner's question, a sunburn, a granddaughter's joke present, a divorce, a friend's scare about a bald head. Writers include a dairy farmer who never wore a hat, a roofer in Texas, a surf lifesaver, a paramedic whose hands split from sanitiser and constant washing, a widower whose itch kept him awake, a rugby player who shared towels, a wrestler with back acne, a house painter, a ferry captain, a retired miner of seventy-five and a night-shift bakery worker on a tight budget. Places run from Merthyr Tydfil to Mumbai and Billings to Buenos Aires. Concerns include acne and the dark marks it leaves, razor bumps, a red face people mistook for drinking, eczema, dandruff, winter itch, thin skin at seventy-two, a slow-healing cut with diabetes, an aftershave rash and a sore on the lip. Writers describe too many products from TikTok, lemon juice that made things worse, isotretinoin, fragrance-free three-step routines and putting the razor down. Several men who worked outdoors had spots frozen or cut out and are now checked regularly. Plenty stayed imperfect: scars remained, eczema looks like a lifelong companion for one pharmacist, and some changes were modest.
Who it's for
For men who have never owned more than a bar of soap, those dealing with acne, razor bumps, redness or sun damage, and the partners and daughters leaving tubs of cream by the sink.
