From the Introduction
A plain bottle beside the coffee, full of large brown capsules that smell faintly of a butcher's shop. In one Galway house it stood in for a mother's liver and onions, fried every other Friday and sworn off at the age of nine. The writers here describe what sent them to organ capsules, what their blood tests showed, and the times a test, a pharmacist or their own body told them to stop.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe taking organ supplements, mostly freeze-dried beef liver in capsules, or deciding against them. Many began tired: a night-shift nurse who could not tolerate iron pills, an Amarillo trucker, a parcel driver in Mexico City, a cabin crew supervisor crossing time zones, a new dad nobody checked on, a widow cooking for one. Others came through heavy periods and a ferritin of six, twelve years without meat and low B12, thinning hair, PCOS, a teenage hockey player who could not finish practice, or a cattle farmer who had thrown the organs away for forty years. Places run from Thessaloniki to Tamworth. Several were told to stop or wait: a woman planning a pregnancy whose midwife put down her pen, a couple trying to conceive, a woman preparing for knee replacement, a cancer survivor, a woman years after gastric bypass, a woman with Crohn's disease who wishes she had called her specialist first. Some lessons were about timing, such as capsules taken with black coffee or near a thyroid tablet. The harder outcomes are here too: a gout flare in Leeds, a ferritin that climbed from 41 to 389, a personal trainer who doubled the dose and got cracked lips. Many found the blood test mattered more than the bottle, and some went back to cooking liver.
Who it's for
For people considering liver or organ capsules for tiredness or low iron, those already taking them, and anyone who wants to see the blood tests, mistakes and second thoughts behind the bottle.
