From the Introduction
Nine rounds of cream, counted by a joiner who measures twice and cuts once. Two years of thrush treatment for something that was never thrush. The writers here describe the years they waited before saying the problem out loud to a doctor, the operation many of them had put off for decades, and the weeks of recovery that followed.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe adult circumcision, from the first awkward appointment to the months after surgery. Many writers had a foreskin too tight to pull back for years; others came with repeated infections, scarring from lichen sclerosus, a foreskin stuck behind the head of the penis, a tear during sex, a zip, or problems after a catheter or radiotherapy. One infection led to a diabetes diagnosis, and one man nearly ignored a sore that would not heal. Some men chose it for faith, completing a conversion in Manchester or Toronto, or settling in Israel; others joined programmes in Kisumu, Bulawayo, Jinja and Lusaka, or simply decided for themselves, from a 19-year-old in Daegu before army service to a man of 40 in Atlanta. The writers are warehouse workers, a diesel mechanic, a sheep farmer, a taxi driver, a long-haul trucker, a boda boda rider, a chef and a retired railwayman, aged 19 to 77, writing from Leeds to Recife. Daily life features heavily: time off work, paying in instalments, waiting lists, the VA, a second language, autism, a needle phobia and a wife's account of the dressings. Not every outcome was simple: some bled on the first night, had wounds reopen or needed further surgery, and a few were left with mixed feelings or regret.
Who it's for
For men who have been told they may need circumcision, men weighing it for faith or personal reasons, and the partners and families who sit with them in the waiting room.
