From the Introduction
A friend leaning in quietly between lessons, a wife speaking up in the kitchen, a husband holding a pillowcase while they folded laundry: most people in this book were told before they ever noticed anything themselves. Others worried for years about a smell nobody else could detect. The writers here describe the shame, the products that stung, and the small, dull habits that finally changed things.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe body odour, from the first quiet warning to the routines that made it manageable. A fifteen-year-old in Manchester whose school shirts smelled by lunchtime, a long-haul trucker living in his cab, a shipyard welder in Gdansk, a night-shift nurse in Mexico City, a hijab wearer in Birmingham, a fly-in fly-out miner in Queensland and a salon owner in Kingston who learned her scalp needed care too are among them, with voices from Lagos to Lisbon. Writers try whole-body deodorants, pharmacy antiperspirants, natural deodorants, laser treatment, cotton and wool in place of synthetics, and a grandmother's remedies. Some found a medical reason: a sharp new smell at fifty-eight, sweat that changed on new tablets, during chemotherapy or on testosterone, an infection under skin folds, and a warehouse supervisor told for years to wash more before he got a proper answer. A mother finds words for her teenage son, a widower learns to change his own shirts, and a retired schoolteacher finds washing harder at seventy-two. Not everything worked. Two writers ended up with raw skin from a whole-body deodorant, a natural deodorant experiment ended in hiding, and laser helped one woman without removing the smell entirely.
