From the Introduction
Six weeks after her son was born, a mother in Cork stopped halfway up her own stairs, gripping the rail and waiting for her heart to settle. Most of the people in this book reached the infusion chair after months or years of a tiredness that sleep did not touch. The writers here describe being told it was stress, age or motherhood, the blood test that finally showed a number, and what changed afterwards.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe iron infusions and the long tiredness that led to them. Writers reached the drip through heavy periods and fibroids, pregnancy and twins, coeliac disease, Crohn's and colitis, gastric bypass and sleeve surgery, daily ibuprofen, dialysis, heart failure, chemotherapy, lifelong nosebleeds, a vegan diet and frequent blood donation. Among them are a mechanic turned away at a blood drive in Columbus, a maths teacher in Pune, a student runner in Manchester, a shopkeeper in Jaipur whose haemoglobin was six, a cyclist in Cape Town and a rig worker in Aberdeen. One writer spent six weeks fighting her insurer, another paid for treatment himself, a woman who faints at needles found help with her fear, and a nurse in Manila learned what the drip feels like from the chair. Low iron was often a clue rather than the whole answer: a coeliac diagnosis, years of hidden bleeding, a bigger problem found through a routine test, snoring that ended with a machine at night. Not every story goes smoothly. One infusion had to be stopped for a reaction, one writer had a brown stain on her arm for months, another fell ill weeks later with a side effect nobody had mentioned, and some needed repeat rounds or found that iron helped with only part of the problem.
Who it's for
For anyone who has been tired for a long time and told it is stress or age, people facing a first infusion, and families who have watched someone they love run on empty.
