From the Introduction
The first spot looked like an ingrown hair on his thigh, small and red and sore where his jeans rubbed, so a logistics worker in Manchester ignored it. Many people in this book began the same way, sitting on the edge of the bed with a phone, deciding whether to worry. The writers here describe the fever and lesions that followed, the weeks behind a closed door, and the harder question of whom to tell.

A note before you read

This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe mpox, from the first fever or spot through isolation and back to ordinary life. The writers include a sexual health nurse who caught it from a patient, a contact tracer in Rotterdam who fell ill herself, a market trader in Lagos facing rumours, a community health worker in Goma, a roofer in Houston with no insurance, a first-year student isolating in halls, a woman twenty-four weeks pregnant, a lorry driver, a pastor and a mother whose son fell ill first, from Copenhagen and Bogota to Gulu and the Dadaab camp. They describe internal pain that meant four days in hospital, sores in the mouth and throat, lesions beside the eye, an infection on top of the infection, the itch of the third week, marks on the face and swollen glands. Care ranges from rest and pain relief to an antiviral study, and some caught it after one or two vaccine doses. Daily life means sharing one bathroom, a dog sent to a sister, food left at the door, twelve phone calls to contacts, lost wages and, for one man, coming out to his mother. Not everyone bounced back: a man living with HIV describes a hard stretch after stopping his pills, and a surveyor was still not himself three months after the last scab.

Who it's for

For anyone recovering from mpox or waiting on a result, and for partners, families, friends and health workers who want to understand the fear, the isolation and the practical help that mattered most.
