From the Introduction
A kitchen table in the weeks around a sixty-fifth birthday holds a Medicare card still in its envelope, a stack of glossy plan booklets, a notepad of doctors' names and a phone that keeps ringing with unknown numbers. Somewhere in that pile is a deadline already running. The writers here describe how they chose, what it cost them and what they would do differently.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe choosing and living with Medicare. Some arrived at sixty-five assuming it would simply turn up like a birthday card; others came through disability, kidney failure and dialysis, or COPD and oxygen, one at thirty-one. The writers include a hospital cafeteria worker in Tucson, a retired logger whose plan left his county, a roofer whose daughter reads him the letters in Spanish, a snowbird couple splitting the year between Wisconsin and Arizona, a commercial fisherman in Homer, a farmworker who got in on his wife's work record and a widow of eighty-four learning the paperwork her husband always handled. The options they weighed include Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan, stand-alone drug plans, TRICARE, retiree and federal plans, Extra Help and dual Medicaid plans, free state counsellors, agents good and bad, and a yearly fifteen-minute review with a cup of coffee. Daily life comes through: a hip replacement, meals delivered after a hospital stay, a hospice decision, a spouse with dementia. Several surprises were costly: a late-enrollment penalty after COBRA, a hospital stay billed as observation, an HSA tax mistake, a cheap drug plan that cost the most, a scam call, an Advantage plan in Georgia that proved hard to leave, and coverage that stops at the border.
Who it's for
For anyone approaching sixty-five or coming to Medicare through disability, adult children helping a parent decide, and enrolled readers wondering whether their plan still fits.
