From the Introduction
A face in the bathroom mirror looks as if someone has breathed on the glass, and by lunchtime the haze has nearly lifted. Several of the people in this book kept a hair dryer by the sink for those mornings. The writers here describe Fuchs' dystrophy from the first foggy starts and haloed headlights to corneal transplants, days lying flat, and the slow return of clear sight.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe Fuchs' dystrophy, the slow clouding of the cornea that many found worst first thing in the morning. Writers blamed their glasses, their age, kitchen steam or screens, and one was told for eight years that she had dry eyes. They include a school kitchen manager, a bus driver of thirty-one years, a shipyard welder told he was young for it, a dentist, a watchmaker, a tango teacher, a long-haul trucker, a retired airline pilot, a pastor, a fisherman in Tromsø and a carpenter who said yes at eighty-six, writing from Albuquerque to Sapporo and Lagos to Prague. Many describe watching and waiting for years before surgery, then a combined cataract operation, DMEK or the thicker DSAEK graft, a full-thickness transplant decades earlier, or a gentler option that avoided a donor cornea. Daily life means salt drops that sting, lying flat with an air bubble, weeks off the road or out of the surf, driving tests, insurance paperwork and waiting for tissue from overseas. Some recoveries were harder: a second eye slower than the first, a bubble that needed another go, raised pressure from drops, a red eye on a Friday night, a graft that faded after nine years, and an alternative that did not work. Several write about family history and donors they will never meet.

Who it's for

For anyone with foggy mornings or a new diagnosis of Fuchs' dystrophy, for those weighing a corneal transplant, and for the spouses and children who drive to the clinic and help with drops.
