From the Introduction
A midwife lowers the lights, a partner stops talking, someone presses play on a recording, and one long breath goes out. That small quiet turns up again and again, in a midwife-led pool near Inverness and on a six-bed ward in Lagos with a generator switching on. The writers here describe what they practised beforehand, what they used on the day, and what happened when the plan changed.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe hypnobirthing and other ways of preparing for labour with breathing, relaxation, recordings and a written plan. People came to it through a fear of needles, a fear of birth that began at fourteen, a hard first birth they carried for years, a baby lost before, or plain scepticism; one accountant thought it was nonsense. Writers include a nineteen-year-old living with her grandmother, a single mum with her sister as birth partner, two mums, a labour and delivery nurse, a man who fixes air conditioning units and needed the course most, a grain farmer seventy minutes from the nearest labour ward, and a bookkeeper giving birth in her second language. They write from Pune to Inverness and from Nairobi to Munich. Births range across midwife-led units, a home birth on the kitchen floor, pools and water births, inductions for high blood pressure and gestational diabetes, twins, a baby five weeks early, planned and emergency caesareans, a ninety-minute labour and three days of early labour. Several write about asking hard questions and being heard, and about prayer and a female doctor. Outcomes are mixed: one labour took thirty hours and ended with forceps, a planned VBAC became a repeat caesarean, and one writer says it hurt far more than she expected.
Who it's for
For pregnant people who are curious or sceptical about hypnobirthing, birth partners who want something useful to do, and anyone preparing again after a birth that did not go as hoped.
