From the Introduction
There is a chair beside most hospital beds, and in one Seville ward it was green vinyl with a crack on the left arm. An electrician in Leeds sat in the specialist's office with a notebook and wrote down every word. The writers here are the husbands, wives and partners who stayed, and they describe the injections, the paperwork, the long drives and the quiet that came after.

A note before you read

This book is a collection of personal, first-person testimonials offered as companion reading. It is not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or decision.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe caring for a husband, wife or partner through cancer. The writers include a long-haul trucker driving to every appointment in Scranton, a London bus driver whose wife has multiple myeloma, two retired nurses in Perth, a seamstress in Kampala and a taxi driver in Minneapolis interpreting at the bedside. They write from Dayton to Lagos, Osaka, Cape Town and Lyon, about breast, prostate, pancreatic, lung, ovarian, testicular, and head and neck cancers among others. They describe learning stoma care, feeding through a tube, steroid mood swings, a protective unit where a palm on the glass had to do, Ramadan on a chemotherapy schedule, asking about fertility before treatment, and a dining table buried in forms. Several tell what they said to the children, how they handled relatives full of advice, and how hard it was to accept a casserole. Newlyweds sit beside couples married more than fifty years. Some partners recovered, some live with cancer from scan to scan, and some died, in accounts of hospice at home, a brain tumour that changed a husband's personality, and pancreatic cancer that moved very fast. Others describe the quiet that settled in a marriage after treatment ended.

Who it's for

For husbands, wives and partners sitting beside someone through cancer treatment, and for the family and friends who want to understand what that chair asks of the person in it.
