From the Introduction
A dark red mark on the tissue in a staff toilet, early in a pregnancy already guarded with both hands. Then came the scan, a word few had heard before, and days of waiting in a house that felt very quiet. The writers here describe those weeks between scans, what they were told to do, and how each pregnancy carried on or ended.

About this volume

Inside this volume

Fifty first-person accounts describe subchorionic haematoma, a collection of blood seen on a pregnancy scan, most often after early bleeding. Writers found it at a sister's wedding reception, in a hotel bathroom on a work trip to Abuja, in the shower after a frozen embryo transfer, and after slipping on the stairs with a laundry basket. A few never bled at all and heard about it from a sonographer who went quiet. They include a third-grade teacher, a baker on the four o'clock shift, a veterinary nurse who knew too much about scans, a nursing assistant who lifts adults for a living, a market trader in Nairobi, a midwife of sixteen years, a mother pregnant again at forty-five, and a grandmother beside her daughter, from Leeds to Kingston and from Pune to rural Iowa. They describe rest advice with a two-year-old at home, pelvic rest, staying on aspirin, heparin jabs, pessaries that made one writer sleepy, Rh negative injections, work notes and lighter duties, and old brown blood long after the all-clear. Many pregnancies carried on to a baby. Others did not: one writer lost her pregnancy at ten weeks, one lost a twin, one heartbeat stopped at twelve weeks, and one writer was still watching her scans at sixteen weeks.

Who it's for

For anyone bleeding in early pregnancy or waiting on a follow-up scan, and for the partners, mothers and friends who sit in the same waiting rooms beside them.
