From the Introduction
A dull pop in the middle of the night, a bucket in one hand on wet bathroom tiles, a retired greyhound lunging after a cat: the moment a shoulder leaves its socket tends to stay vivid. What comes after is slower. The writers here describe slings, scans, waiting lists and the long work of trusting an arm again.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe shoulder dislocation and the recovery that follows. The injuries came from rugby tackles, a jiu-jitsu hold tapped too late, a snowboard fall on the last run, an electric scooter on wet cobbles, seizures, a ladder on a wet day and a dance floor at a cousin's wedding. Writers include a sixteen-year-old four weeks from exams, a college offensive lineman, a cheerleading flyer, a violinist, a dairy farmer with cows to milk, a baker up at three, a wheelchair user whose arms are his legs, a former soldier who hid his injury and an 81-year-old who lay on the floor for an hour. They write from Columbus to Lahore and Bergen to Kingston. Decisions range from a sling and physiotherapy alone to surgical repair, the Latarjet operation after bone loss and a second operation when the first repair failed; writers with very flexible joints describe building strength instead. Daily life runs through it: sleepless nights after the operation, a six-year-old's drawing of a dad with one tiny arm, eleven months on a waiting list. Not every recovery was smooth. Some describe stretched nerves, numb patches or burning in the hand, an injury missed at first, and a fear of using the arm that outlasted the healing.
Who it's for
For anyone whose shoulder has come out once or more, who is weighing surgery against physiotherapy, or who is helping someone through the weeks in a sling.
