From the Introduction
In many of the homes behind this book, a collar or lead still hangs on a hook by the door, a happy sight in some and too hard to move in others. A bite to the face lasts seconds. The writers here describe the months and years that followed: dressings, stitches, operations, the first look in the mirror and the first day back at work or school.

About this volume
Inside this volume
Fifty first-person accounts describe recovering from a dog bite to the face, told by the people bitten and by those beside them. Bites came from a gate left unlatched on a postal round, a street dog in Pune fed biscuits for a year, a farm dog guarding puppies, and in several stories the family's own dog. Writers include a welder whose nose was rebuilt in three steps, a nursing student with a tube in her eyelid, a veterinary technician, a dog trainer, a paramedic, parents of babies and schoolchildren, a sister who felt left out, and the owner of a dog that bit a little girl. They write from Manchester to Mumbai, Accra to Bogota. They describe flaps, skin grafts with a donor site that hurt more than the face, a tissue expander under a child's cheek, a piece of ear carried in ice, rabies injections, facial exercises for an uneven smile, a fourteen-month waiting list, and raising money for a boy's operation. Not every recovery was smooth: one clinic only covered the wound, stitches went bad within days, a farmer waited too long to go to hospital, and several writers describe nightmares, fear near dogs and stares that outlasted the stitches. One man stopped after two operations; another has kept his scar for sixty years.
Who it's for
